The University of the Free State (UFS) is a well-established public university in South Africa, with its main campus in Bloemfontein. Understanding APS at UFS
Before exploring the courses, it’s important to understand how APS works at UFS.
The university calculates your APS using your six best academic subjects from the National Senior Certificate (NSC). Points are awarded based on the percentage achieved in each subject. For example:

Level 7 (80–100%) = 7–8 points

Level 6 (70–79%) = 6 points

Level 5 (60–69%) = 5 points

Level 4 (50–59%) = 4 points

Level 3 (40–49%) = 3 points
Life Orientation can add 1 extra point if you score 60% or higher.
In general, UFS requires a minimum APS of around 20 for some entry-level programmes, although each course may also have subject requirements.

How to Apply
Applications open on Wednesday, 1 April 2026. Application to the UFS is free.
Undergraduate applicants: If you require further information before applying, consult the 2027 Undergraduate Prospectus. Only apply for programmes for which you meet all the minimum entrance requirements. You may choose two options to study.
