With the beginning of the academic year around the corner, you might be wondering “how do late University applications work?", Tertiary institutions have strict application closing dates. But if you missed the first deadline, you might still be in luck.

How do Late University Applications Work?

You should check the website of the university to see if they accept late applications. If you’re still unsure, your best option is to contact the university directly. They can check the course you want to study and see if there’s still space. If there is, you’ll be able to apply. However, this does not mean you’ll automatically be accepted. You need to make sure you meet the entry requirements of the programme

What do I need to Apply

Usually, applications close in the previous year. So if you want to study in 2022, you should have applied in 2021. This gives universities enough time to go through the thousands of applications they receive.

But if you still want to apply, make sure you have the right documents. This includes:

  • Completed application forms
  • Certified copies of your latest academic results
  • Application fees
  • Certified copy of your ID

Some programmes require additional documents, such as motivational letters and references from your school teachers. It is also compulsory to write the National Benchmark Tests before you can be accepted at a university.

Walk-in Applications

Most universities and colleges in South Africa do not accept walk-in applications. And since the pandemic, they’re going to be even less likely to want you to pop up at their buildings. So your best bet is to apply online.

What are My Other Options?

If you’re feeling stuck because you haven’t found a place to study yet, don’t give up. There are a few options available for you:

Central Applications Clearing House (CACH)

The CACH system is for those who applied to university, but weren’t accepted due to a lack of space. This service helps students find space at available universities or colleges.

TVET Colleges

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges have different application closing dates throughout the year. This all depends on what you want to study. They are a great alternative to universities.

Private Colleges

There are many private colleges that don’t have application closing dates.
